Cheri Beasley v Ted Budd For NC Senate 2022 — Who Has Your Vote?
(NRPI.org) – The North Carolina senate seat will be one of the most closely watched contests as the Democratic and Republican sides battle out for control of the Senate in 2022. While the incumbent, Sen. Richard Burr(R), is not vying to be reelected, there are other candidates, including Cheri Beasley (D) and Ted Budd (R), who have tossed their hats in the ring.
Is North Carolina Traditionally Red or Blue?
It is safe to say that North Carolina is traditionally Republican (red). The people have not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 2008. In 2016, Trump won the state with 49.8% of the vote, and Hillary Clinton secured 46.2% of the votes. In 2020, Donald Trump carried the state over President Biden (49.9% to 48.6%). Therefore, this state is considered Republican.
Major Candidates
Ted Budd
Budd has been in Congress since 2016, when he beat out several other Republicans in the GOP primary with the assistance of the Club for Growth. His votes have always aligned with Trump’s presidency and policies, but he did not support the pandemic aid bill and a bill aimed at increased stimulus payments for COVID-19.
The GOP stands behind him as someone with business experience that could benefit Washington. He has invested in his family’s agricultural business and owns a gun business. In addition, he has worked at his family’s business (landscaping and janitorial).
Budd’s Policies
Budd is fighting political censorship by social media and believes in securing the Southern U.S. border. He prides himself on being the most pro-Trump candidate.
He is backed by, among others, former president Donald Trump, Marsha Blackburn, U.S. Senator from Tennessee, Ted Cruz, U.S. Senator from Texas, several U.S. representatives, and state officials. In addition, he is backed by organizations including Club for Growth, FreedomWorks, Gun Owners of America, National Border Patrol Council, and Senate Conservatives Fund.
Cheri Beasley
Beasley was appointed by Cooper as chief justice of the state Supreme Court back in 2019. She launched her campaign after losing the seat to Justice Paul Newby, a Republican.
Before joining the Supreme Court, she worked as a state judge on North Carolina’s Court of Appeal. She has also worked as a district court judge.
Beasley’s Policies
Beasley hopes to do a few things with her policies, including expanding access to health care in North Carolina and reforming the criminal justice system. She also plans to stand up for women’s rights and improve housing affordability within the state.
Emily’s List-a reproductive rights group, backs her bid for the Senate seat. The Congressional Black Caucus, a political action committee, U.S. Rep. David Price, G. K. Butterfield, and Alma Adams- U.S. Representatives from North Carolina, Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Senator from New York, and Cory Booker- U.S. Senator from New Jersey.
Seven other candidates in the race include Mark Walker, Pat McCrory, and Marjorie Eastman.
